    Oligonucleotide that binds nuclear factor NF-kappa-B acts as a lymphoid-specific and inducible enhancer element

    The immunoglobulin kappa light chain gene contains a lymphoid-specific enhancer that includes several short protein-binding sequences. The sequence that binds the nuclear factor NF-kappa B was tested for its ability to act independently as an enhancer element by inserting it into test plasmids containing the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase gene. When analyzed for activity by transient transfection into lymphoid and nonlymphoid cells, a single copy of the NF-kappa B binding site could act as a tissue-specific upstream activating element. Two copies (dimer) showed 10-fold higher activity than did one copy and could act as an enhancer element 2.5 kilobases downstream of the transcriptional start site. The enhancer activity of this sequence was correlated with the presence of the cognate binding protein, NF-kappa B. This sequence acted as an inducible enhancer under conditions that induce NF-kappa B binding activity. Thus, the NF-kappa B binding site acts by itself as a tissue-specific and inducible enhancer element, and two copies show cooperative interaction

    Deep, wide-field, multi-band imaging of z approximately equal to 0.4 clusters and their environs

    The existence of an excess population of blue galaxies in the cores of distant, rich clusters of galaxies, commonly referred to as the 'Butcher-Oemler' effect is now well established. Spectroscopy of clusters at z = 0.2-0.4 has confirmed that the luminous blue populations comprise as much as 20 percent of these clusters. This fraction is much higher that the 2 percent blue fraction found for nearby rich clusters, such as Coma, indicating that rapid galaxy evolution has occurred on a relatively short time scale. Spectroscopy has also shown that the 'blue' galaxies can basically be divided into three classes: 'starburst' galaxies with large (O II) equivalent widths, 'post-starburst' E+A galaxies (i.e. galaxies with strong Balmer lines shortward of 4000A but elliptical-like colors, and normal spiral/irregulars. Unfortunately, it is difficult to obtain enough spectra of individual galaxies in these intermediate redshift clusters to say anything statistically meaningful. Thus, limited information is available about the relative numbers of these three classes of 'blue' galaxies and the associated E/SO population in these intermediate redshift clusters. More statistically meaningful results can be derived from deep imaging of these clusters. However, the best published data to date (e.g. MacLaren et al. 1988; Dressler & Gunn 1992) are limited to the cluster cores and do not sample the galaxy luminosity functions very deeply at the bluest wavelengths. Furthermore, only limited spectro-energy distribution data is available below 4000A in the observed cluster rest frame providing limited sensitivity to 'recent' star formation activity. To improve this situation, we are currently obtaining deep, wide-field UBRI images of all known rich clusters at z approx. equals 0.4. Our main objective is to obtain the necessary color information to distinguish between the E+SO, 'E+A', and spiral/irregular galaxy populations throughout the cluster/supercluster complex. At this redshift, UBRI correspond to rest-frame 2500A/UVR bandpasses. The rest-frame UVR system provides a powerful 'blue' galaxy discriminate given the expected color distribution. Moreover, since 'hot' stars peak near 2500A, that bandpass is a powerful probe of recent star formation activity in all classes of galaxies. In particular, it is sensitive to ellipticals with 'UV excess' populations (MacLaren et al. 1988)

    Color-octet scalars at the LHC

    Color-octet scalars, if present at the TeV scale, will be produced in abundance at the LHC. We discuss in some detail the phenomenology of scalars in the (8,2)_{1/2} representation, recently identified by Manohar and Wise as an addition to the standard-model Higgs sector consistent with the principle of minimal flavor violation. Couplings of this multiplet to the Higgs lift the mass degeneracy among its states, possibly allowing for two-body decays of a heavier colored scalar to a lighter one and a gauge boson. We perform a renormalization group analysis of these couplings and find that limits from Tevatron searches leave little room for these decays. This fact, and the assumption of minimal flavor violation, lead us to study the case where the octets decay to the heaviest kinematically accessible fermion pairs. Focusing on pair-production events leading to (t t-bar t t-bar), (b b-bar b b-bar), and (b b-bar t t-bar) final states, we find that discovery at the LHC should be possible up to masses exceeding 1 TeV.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figues; corrected typos and added discussion of decays to b b-ba

    Precipitation in a warming world: Assessing projected hydro-climate changes in California and other Mediterranean climate regions.

    In most Mediterranean climate (MedClim) regions around the world, global climate models (GCMs) consistently project drier futures. In California, however, projections of changes in annual precipitation are inconsistent. Analysis of daily precipitation in 30 GCMs reveals patterns in projected hydrometeorology over each of the five MedClm regions globally and helps disentangle their causes. MedClim regions, except California, are expected to dry via decreased frequency of winter precipitation. Frequencies of extreme precipitation, however, are projected to increase over the two MedClim regions of the Northern Hemisphere where projected warming is strongest. The increase in heavy and extreme precipitation is particularly robust over California, where it is only partially offset by projected decreases in low-medium intensity precipitation. Over the Mediterranean Basin, however, losses from decreasing frequency of low-medium-intensity precipitation are projected to dominate gains from intensifying projected extreme precipitation. MedClim regions are projected to become more sub-tropical, i.e. made dryer via pole-ward expanding subtropical subsidence. California's more nuanced hydrological future reflects a precarious balance between the expanding subtropical high from the south and the south-eastward extending Aleutian low from the north-west. These dynamical mechanisms and thermodynamic moistening of the warming atmosphere result in increased horizontal water vapor transport, bolstering extreme precipitation events

    Volunteer Motivations at the 2012 Super Bowl

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine mega-event volunteers’ motivations and their impact on volunteer satisfaction. Additionally, this study investigated motivational differences between volunteers based upon four demographic variables: age, gender, educational level, and income. Design/methodology/approach – A modified version of the Volunteer Motivations Scale for International Sporting Events (Bang and Chelladurai, 2009) was administered to 8,000 Super Bowl volunteers via Survey Monkey with the permission of the Indiana Sports Corporation. In all, 24 percent (n=1,928) of the volunteers completed the survey. Exploratory factor analysis was used to reduce the survey questions into a smaller number factors. Multivariate analysis of variance was utilized to compare differences in the four demographic variables on the factors. Multiple regression was used to predict satisfaction on the basis of the four factors. Findings – Volunteers were motivated by four factors: Community Support, Love of Sports, Personal Growth, and Career Development. These four factors all significantly predicted satisfaction with the volunteer experience. The overall MANOVA was significant and revealed that ten of 16 group comparisons possessed significant differences. Females rated Community higher than males, while males rated Love of Sports higher than females. Older volunteers and those with higher household incomes were motivated more by Community Support, while younger volunteers and those with lower incomes were motivated by Career Development. Likewise, less educated volunteers placed a higher value on Career motivations than more educated volunteers who placed a high value on Personal Growth. Research limitations/implications – Dissatisfied volunteers may have chosen to not participate in the study. Follow-up interviews with dissatisfied volunteers might provide insight for event organizers that would shed light on factors that influence retention and recidivism. Practical implications – The findings of this study suggest that mega sport volunteer managers should recognize that motivational differences among volunteers do exist and utilize this information for creating recruitment materials targeted to specific groups. Then volunteers can be assigned to tasks that tap into their desire, thus enhancing potential volunteer satisfaction and their return as a volunteer at future events. Originality/value – This study was conducted in the context of America’s largest mega event in a city that hosted the event for the first time. In addition to collecting one of the largest number of responses for volunteers at mega-sporting events, the development of the Community Support factor was unique within the context of this study. The Community Support factor was rated as the most important by volunteers and tied to other questions such as wanting to help make the event a success, helping others, and creating a better society. This indicates that volunteers had pride in their community and wanted to help the event be successful by helping the city’s visitors

    A STUDY OF EMERGENT LEADERSHIP STYLE AT THE D-DAY INVASION

    Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of the Third Reich's Fortress Europa, has received considerable historical coverage since it occurred, Moreover, on the 60th anniversary of the Normandy invasion, historians of the U.S. Army's Center of Military History, supplemented by members of the 44thMilitary History Detachment from Fort McPherson, Georgia, plus three other Reserve Military History Detachments, the 49th , the 305th, and the 53rd Military History Detachments interviewed nearly 200 invasion veterans in tents just up the hill from Omaha Beach. Transcriptions and distillations of these interviews yielded considerable historical material that allowed a qualitative study of American leadership in Normandy in late spring 1944. These oral histories reveal that compelling circumstances activated a core set of leadership competency traits in most of the troops. Other postwar leadership theories simply do not apply for Normandy operations.I observed leadership behaviors applicable when put to the test of real life situations, where making sound and timely decisions in the compacted battle space of the Normandy Beaches and countryside resulted in people living or dying. The measure of this qualitative study was the observations of whether a core of leadership traits, skills, training, and experience or other factors was present in the examples set by those who participated in D-Day.I hypothesize that a core of leadership competencies emerged in the American troops, regardless of their background, in times of crisis. Using the knowledge gained from both individual and collective histories of the group studied, this study will seek to discover some of the critical factors that enabled leadership to emerge among the participants in the fog of war.The study revealed that compelling circumstances activated a core set of leadership competency traits in most troops. Based on these results we conclude that there is core of leadership traits that are carried by most people. These findings led to the development of two theories on leadership: Emergent Leadership During Crisis (ELDC) and Emergent Leadership Over Time (ELOT). These two terms describe the process that occurs within individuals as crisis precipitates reaction, based on circumstances of the event, the individual's readiness in terms of trait maturity (the level of development of particular traits needed to act in the situation), and the event itself
